{"id":1095,"date":"2021-05-19T02:55:12","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T02:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onceascientist.net\/?p=1095"},"modified":"2021-05-19T03:03:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T03:03:54","slug":"ep48","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onceascientist.net\/2021\/05\/19\/ep48\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanderbilt Professor, Cody Siciliano, on developing a passion and the value of community college"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-8279616\"><\/div>\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/975439\/8279616-48-vanderbilt-professor-cody-siciliano-on-developing-a-passion-and-the-value-of-community-college.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-8279616&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<h2>Cody Siciliano: Professor at Vanderbilt University<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cody Siciliano is a professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he runs a research program geared towards understanding and treating substance abuse.\u00a0 He and his trainees want to figure out how some people can be exposed to drugs for their entire lives without issue, while others quickly develop substance-use disorders after brief exposures to drugs or alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cody\u2019s academic training has been far from typical.\u00a0 A self-described \u201ckindergarten drop-out,\u201d Cody was home-schooled for many of his formative years before electing to attend Sullivan County Community College instead of high school.\u00a0 After finishing his Associate\u2019s degree, Cody transferred to Binghamton University, where he discovered his love of neuroscience in one of the final classes he took.\u00a0 Cody explored his new interest in brains first by working as a technician at Binghamton, then going on to earn a PhD in Sara Jones\u2019 laboratory at Wake Forest University and completing postdoctoral training with Kay Tye at MIT.\u00a0 Cody and Nick discuss how their early education and especially their experiences at community colleges prepared them for autonomous careers in scientific research.\u00a0 \u201cI think [personalized learning] made a huge difference for me,\u201d Cody says.\u00a0 \u201cLearning how to learn teaches you so much&#8230; it really helps you figure out what you\u2019re good at and what you\u2019re passionate about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Learning how to learn teaches you so much.<\/p><cite>Cody Siciliano<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Cody and Nick also talk about what it\u2019s like to come into academia as an outsider.\u00a0 Having a parent or another close family member who is involved in research can be a tremendous boon to a young scientist\u2019s career; they can impart useful information and expectations, provide advice, and help with networking.\u00a0 However, according to Cody, there are a number of benefits to being a scientist with no preconceived notions about how academia works.\u00a0 \u201cIf you don\u2019t come from those backgrounds,\u201d he says, \u201cyou almost have to break the norms to make it.\u00a0 I just did a bunch of stuff I wasn\u2019t supposed to do.\u201d\u00a0 For example, Cody applied for awards that it \u201cwasn\u2019t [his] turn to apply for\u201d and had no compunctions about walking up to famous researchers and asking them questions at conferences.\u00a0 Cody also credits his na\u00efvet\u00e9 about the normal progression of graduate school for helping him set (and complete) his goal of finishing in only three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out this episode to hear more from this conversation including Cody\u2019s goals as a mentor, his favorite live music, and a discussion of what makes Nashville great!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Notes for this episode were written by Sam Asinof.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Episode 48.
