{"id":924,"date":"2020-10-29T22:47:31","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T22:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onceascientist.net\/?p=924"},"modified":"2020-10-29T22:58:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T22:58:02","slug":"ep36","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onceascientist.net\/2020\/10\/29\/ep36\/","title":{"rendered":"JPL geophysicist, Fernando Paolo, on breaking stereotypes and the influence of strong women in his life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-6003586\"><\/div>\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/975439\/6003586-36-jpl-geophysicist-fernando-paolo-on-breaking-stereotypes-and-the-influence-of-strong-women-in-his-life.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-6003586&amp;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Fernando Paolo: Geophysical Data Scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, Nick talks to Fernando Paolo.&nbsp; Fernando is a postdoctoral fellow at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (based at the California Institute of Technology), where he uses remote imaging and high-performance computing to study how the earth\u2019s ice sheets are changing and how that impacts the planet\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fernando admits that he doesn\u2019t remember the first moment when he knew that he wanted to be a scientist&#8211;but it must have been at an early age.&nbsp; He recently found videos of himself at five years old, asking his father about what materials his toys were made from.&nbsp; \u201cI was always very much like that,\u201d Fernando says.&nbsp; \u201cI wanted to know why things were the way they were.&nbsp; So the obvious path forward [was to pursue] a scientific career.&nbsp; Science is always about finding the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Science is always about finding the truth.<\/p><cite>Fernando Paolo<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fernando also talks about his strong connection to the natural world, garnered by splitting his early years between a beach town and in the mountains of his native Brazil.&nbsp; He believes that experience has driven his lifelong interest in the planet.&nbsp; He studied Oceanography as an undergraduate at the University of Sao Paulo, before pursuing a master\u2019s in Geophysics and then getting his doctorate from UC San Diego in the same subject.&nbsp; Recently, he\u2019s become interested in solving environmental problems from outside of academia.&nbsp; He\u2019s transitioning to a new position with Global Fishing Watch, an nonprofit organization which aims to promote the sustainable use of marine resources.&nbsp; \u201cI don\u2019t want to give up the kind of work that I\u2019m doing,\u201d he says.
